This weekend, we are going on a journey through Rhum JM's Atelier Series– a range of high-quality, cocktail-ready expressions that each highlight a unique aspect of Rhum JM's production capabilities. These expressions have age statements ranging from 1-3 years, and may feature cask types that are atypical for Rhum JM's regular releases.
First up is Épices Crêoles ("Creole spices"). Distilled from a base of sugarcane juice using a creole column still, this rhum was blended to highlight the spicier side of Rhum JM, which is thanks to its 3+ years of aging in ex-Bourbon and ex-French oak casks. It is bottled at 46% ABV.
For transparency, this bottle was provided to me by a brand representative, with no obligation other than to enjoy the rum.

Summary
Épices Crêoles hits the mark that Rhum JM is going for: spicy, savory, but retaining the character of the underlying rhum. For me, this is actually the perfect level of spice in a rhum vieux agricole.
In the glass, the rhum gives off a savory and spicy nose, yielding dried or cooked red fruits, vanilla, and red wine vinegar. The palate and finish are minimal yet expressive, with raspberry, vanilla, and sugarcane notes joining with cola and nutmeg to showcase the elegant spices of this blend.
If I were going to use this in cocktails, it could be a great substitute for a rye in a Manhattan or Vieux Carré. Otherwise, this is a great example of a spice-forward aged agricole rhum that is plenty enjoyable as a neat pour.
