For the next look at Martinique rhum brand Rhum JM, we are looking at one of the blanc expressions adhering to the Rhum Agricole AOC. I say "one of", because Rhum JM Blanc (on my bottle's label, it's classified as "White Rum") joins several other editions of the sub-category that are all proofed at different levels.

This expression is released at 50% ABV, and is produced from a sugarcane juice base, run through a column still, proofed down to 100º/50% ABV, and then bottled in Rhum JM's classic stubby bottle. Let's jump in and see what's in store for us.

Appearance

Clear, medium viscosity

Nose

Fresh sugarcane, underripe green bell pepper, white wine vinegar, hint of Sharpie

Palate

Fresh sugarcane, vanilla, black licorice, sea salt, cooked green bell pepper

Finish

Medium-long, hot, slight salinity; sugarcane, vanilla, sea salt, black licorice

Rating: 7/10

Summary

This 100 proof edition of Rhum JM Blanc is a solid agricole, if a bit plain, compared to other agricoles I've had. It is a great workhorse agricole for cocktail needs, especially the Ti' Punch– although it's hard to find a bad agricole to throw in this French West Indies staple.

Fresh sugarcane, vanilla, and sea salt are the predominating notes throughout, with bell pepper and black licorice making appearances in the background. The back palate has an almost chewy quality to it, emphasizing the black licorice as a bitter and slightly salty finish tapers off.

While it's not my favorite blanc, it's hard to find a better entry into the agricole scene than Rhum JM. The 50% proof point works well here, and I think it helps this expression earn the rating.
